special voice mind behind clear tail fact street inch
Karl got up from his sleep. Some one was crying in the dark. In fact, it came from the street in front of his house.
“Who is out there?” he asked in a strong voice, looking out.
“It's me...Where am I?” came a small voice from the street.
“You’re in my town.” answered Karl.
“That’s fine. Where is that?” the voice came back.
Karl turned on the power to the front light. There was a girl in the street.
“This is called Hopetown,” he said.
“That’s a good name,” said the girl. “I think I saw its lights when I was flying above.”
In the light he saw the girl’s beauty. She was still crying. But Karl had a quick mind. He was certainly able to develop a plan to help her. “Do you have a problem?” Karl asked.
“Well, a little problem. I was falling through the air,” she said. “I was free then, so free...The stars were all around me in the clear night. I came down in that field over there.”
“Are you cold?” Karl said. “Come in and get warm, and have some food.”
“Can you drive me home?” she walked from the street.
“Where is home? And what’s your name?” he said, leading her to the front steps of his housing unit.
“My name is Julia. And if my figures are correct, I live 50 miles from here.”
In the house, Karl went to his cold-food box. It contained a 4-pound fish he was eating before. He cut off an inch above the tail for Julia.
“I hate fish.” she said, turning away. The fish was a little green.
“OK,” Karl said, eating the rest of her fish behind her back. “Now, why were you falling through the air?”
“They were teaching me to fly at night. But the school wanted my final money. Up there in the air, they handed me this special note. It said: “We have waited 8 weeks. Give us our money….now.”
"So how did you get here?" said Karl.
“Well, I didn’t have their money. And I was up in their flying classroom, so they just ...showed me the way out.”
